King Kohli Turns 31!

Every match he plays with a smile,
Every ball he hits like a missile
Every catch out seems completely flawless
He’s our captain, the Indian team is blessed.

Royal Challengers are less challenged because of him
Ranked best in the ODI’s with no career dims
Rest of the teams can back away
Cause Virat Kohli’s here to slay the stage!

Yet again, another chakka! Virat Kohli, the captain of our Indian Cricket team turns 31 today, and the cricket world, couldn’t be more excited to celebrate those wonderful moments that have highlighted potentially everything in his career, the highs and lows, ups and downs, blood, sweat, tears and of course plenty of chaukas and chakkas!

Kohli is not only the dictionary definition of perfection in play, through hard work and struggle, but he is also humble, great with people and a man who owns up to his drawbacks.

He was a passionate cricketer since childhood. At the age of 3, he would pick up his bat and tell his dad to play cricket with him everyday. At age 9, he joined a cricket club near his residence, and his coach said that Kohli was so into his game that he (coach) had to literally push him home after training sessions. Virat went onto play for the Delhi club for several years and then tried for Under 19’s. With his talent and skill, he got into the team and toured several countries. He captained the Under 19 team in Malaysia where he scored a total of 235 runs in 6 matches. He went on to play against England, New Zealand and South Africa till the men in blue won the finals by 12 runs.

After the victory, he was welcomed to the Royal Challengers Bangalore team for 30,000 dollars in 2008. He also was offered the Border-Gavaskar scholarship for which he went to Australia for 6 weeks to learn from the pros. In July 2008, he was selected in the ICC Champions Trophy. Following that, he was picked for ODI’s tour of Sri Lanka, also replacing Shikhar Dhawan during the unofficial tests against Australia, ODI against England and several tri-nations in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These back and forth movements for Kohli, gave him more exposure to International level cricket and definitely bettered his skills. The period of 2010-2011, was rough for both Kohli and the Indian Cricket team, they suffered quite a few losses but our captain tried hard to give his best. He won the man of the match against Australia and continued to play in good form at the World cup. He was the first Indian batsman to score a 100 at a WC platform but followed his next matches with low scores. India surprisingly still made it to the finals and the partnership between Gambhir and Kohli was regarded as the turning point of the match that led to India’s win!

After that point in time, Kohli sailed smoothly. He focused on keeping his performance more consistent, practicing harder, working out more and eating healthy. Being chosen as captain for several ODI’s for a short period of time, again gave him the experience that drives his decision making today. Yes, he had times where his form wasn’t the best, batting wasn’t up to standards and captaincy might have not given the best results but he bounced back and gave his best throughout his career. In the last 3-4 years, Kohli has been shining brighter than ever with perfect scores and even better results. He had been awarded the prestigious Arjuna and Padma Shri awards in 2013 and 2017 respectively. He was Wisden Leading cricketer of the year in 2016 and has made over 20,000 runs in a decade. He is the only player with 15,000 International runs with an average over a 50 and the most successful captain in test matches. He has also made most double hundreds in test matches as a skipper and the first Indian captain to win a test series in Australia. Lastly, he is the fastest player to reach 2000 runs in T20. These were just a few of the many achievements that Virat Kohli has received. Because being an amazing captain and cricketer wasn’t enough for him, he went onto other ventures like becoming a brand ambassador of brands like Manyavar, Puma and Too Yum alongside his beautiful, talented and skillful wife, Anushka Sharma.

As for today, the day he turns 31, he penned a letter to his 15-year-old self talking about his future, attitude and love for life and cricket. He is currently in Bhutan, travelling with his wife, as per reports. They are having a wonderful time as the pictures can tell. All we, and I speak on behalf of the whole nation would like to say is, Virat Kohli has been the greatest and most deserving cricketer in the last few years. We’re all really proud of what he has done for the country and how much his game has improved. He is truly what we all must aspire to become! Happy bday Run Machine/Chiku, Have a blessed life ahead!
